Not only are drone attacks counterproductive militarily, they also add significantly to the "blowback" that undoubtedly will flow to the USA in the future.
Meantime the US ARMY, actually marines, are in the process of introducing M1 Tanks to Afghanistan. They have not been used previously since "we" did not want to identify with the USSR's campaigns in Afghanistan which were heavy with armor. Now, since we are "winning" we have the introduction of more heavy handed offensive weapons and no one will notice the connection to the Russain debacle in the last go-around at empire building. Don't forget that the USSR bordered on Afghanistan and thus had short supply lines, one of the main principles of war that unfortunately are completely lacking in out current wars of empire. They also had huge amounts of tank and other "modern" weapons which were found to be ineffective in their attempt at occupation of a neighbor seemingly an easy mark for the highly touted Russin army. We now claim 2014 as the supposed year we will POSSIBLY start heading out of this mess. Will none of us actually demand sanity?
The news yesterday had some Jackass from the military actually saying that destroying Afgan homes and villages was useful since it pushed those left homeless to interact with their government and thus made that government more useful in their minds. My comment is that such behavior is indeed likely to spark more "involvement" with the government but that involvement is much more likely to be rather negative and explosive in its nature.
Of course to one of my age the picture of Viet Nam with American soldiers burning a village "in order to save it" comes to mind...
